Electrical Thingies

(It smells like solder over here)

Radio Boogie Woogie

A little sonic exploration box I made from an old analogue radio that I circuit bend.
This was the first time I took an old device apart and tried to hack it and is wat send me down the rabbithole of working with electronics and sound.

Lego Duplo Music Makers

As a kid I hade these lego duplo music maker toys to play with. As of recently I’ve bought some of them again to modify. I’ve been poking around to circuitbend them and am reverse engineering the sound expansion card to add custom songs. So far, i’ve added an aux jack with volume control and a switch to toggle between the aux and the internal speaker.

In researching the potential of these toys as instruments, I’ve performed with a selection of them in Sexyland, Amsterdam & De Onderbroek, Nijmegen.

Light Sculpture #1

This is a light sculpture inspired by mechanical devices like 3D printers and factory machines, using standardized 4040 extrusions. I experimented with the modularity of the extrusion in combination with 3D modeled pieces to create a sculpture.

The frame assembly was combined with a discovery I made, that fluorescent tubes can get lit if a tesla coil is placed in their vicinity. This interaction is used as a dimmer mechanism.

VGA Video Synth

This project started with an instagram post of Martijn van Boven, depiciting a broken CRT screen with the text “the medium is the message”. This inspired me to investigate the value of analogue signals in our digital world.

This send me down into the world of videobending. I discovered that the VGA video is an interesting combination of analogue and digital signals. With a digital pulses for horizontal and vertical sync, but analogue values between 0 - 0.7V for the R, G and B color channels.

I’ve started to develop a video synthesizer based around the interplay between these two distinct ways of transfering electrical information.

I was also inspired by the Sandin Image Processor.

My current prototype uses three analogue signal generators for the individual color channels and a digital video chip I hijacked from a VGA test board from aliexpress to achieve the digital H- and V-sync.

Muscle MIDI Controller

Prototype of a controller based around the movement of your hand. There are springs attached to the linear potentiometers so a considerable effort is required to pull them forward. An experiment in controlling digital programmes with the body.

Maybe use this in combination with a headset, to control VST paramaters that alter my voice in a live perfomance.
